Melbourne Zoo opened in 1862 and is the oldest in Australia. Along with its extensive collection of Australian species, the 22 acre site also houses close to 350 animal species from around the globe. The zoo is renowned for its attractive enclosures which allow visitors to explore a number of environments and witness animals in a realistic setting, most notably the magical "The Butterfly House" where one can get up close and personal with hundreds of butterflies.
