Practical Information

Currency

Currency. Australia's currency operates on a decimal system, with the dollar (AUD$) as the basic unit and 100 cents (¢) equaling $1. Bills come in $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5 denominations, differentiated by color. Coins are minted in $2, $1, 50¢, 20¢, 10¢, and 5¢ denominations. The Australian 1 cent and 2 cent coins are no longer in circulation, so totals are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents. For security and longevity, Australian banknotes are made of a durable plastic that make it difficult to reproduce.
Banks are open Monday to Thursday 9:30am to 4pm and on Fridays from 9:30am to 5pm.
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are available throughout the city round the clock.
